The 5220S is the higher-clocking member of the Gold 52xx family. Intel launched it in Q2 2019 on the same 14 nm Cascade Lake die as the rest of the 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable line: alongside the standard Gold 5220 it keeps the identical 24.75 MB of cache and 3.90 GHz turbo, but raises the base frequency from 2.20 to 2.70 GHz and lifts the TDP envelope from 105 to 125 W — which is exactly the headroom sustained all-core workloads need.

Boards that shipped before the Cascade Lake launch usually need a BIOS and microcode update before they will POST with a 5220S.
