Frequently Asked Questions

Eighteen cores at a 165 W envelope leaves little power per core at base frequency; the turbo hierarchy restores clocks as fewer threads are active. The part was designed for fully parallel work, where all cores run and the aggregate throughput is what counts.

For purely multithreaded rendering, yes — thirty-six hardware threads with quad-channel memory remain competitive, and X299 parts are now inexpensive. For single-threaded applications a newer mainstream part is the better buy.

Every unit carries a 1-year warranty against defects in workmanship and function. A verified faulty processor is replaced or refunded, and we cover the return shipping.

Every unit is inspected on arrival and again before dispatch: the heat spreader and the socket contact pads are checked for physical damage, thermal paste is cleaned off, and the processor is run through a full-core load test. Verified faulty units are replaced or refunded under our 1-year warranty.

The minimum order quantity is 2 units. Pricing is quotation-based rather than fixed, so send us the quantity you need and we will reply with a firm quote; volume orders are priced progressively lower.

Any board with an Intel chipset from this list: Intel X299. Tell us the board or the machine model when you enquire and we will confirm compatibility and any BIOS requirement before you order.

4 channels DDR4-2666, up to 128 GB, with a maximum bandwidth of 85 GB/s. The board determines whether ECC modules can be used; on consumer chipsets the same modules run as plain non-ECC. DDR type is not interchangeable — check the board before ordering memory.

No. This is a Core X (HEDT) processor and carries no integrated graphics, and the X-series chipsets provide no display output either — the build requires a discrete graphics card to POST and display anything.

The TDP is 165 W and the maximum operating temperature is 100 °C, so a cooler rated for the LGA2066 socket and at least 165 W is sufficient. No cooler is included with the processor — make sure your chassis has one before the build.

Our stock ships under sSpec SR3RS. The laser marking on the integrated heat spreader is read off each unit and checked against the Intel specification sheet during inspection, and the sSpec is confirmed in the BIOS at boot.

The Intel Core i9-7980XE Processor — 18 cores and 36 threads, 2.6 GHz base rising to 4.2 GHz with Turbo Boost, 24.75 MB Intel Smart Cache, 165 W processor base power, LGA2066. Supplied from stock with a 1-year warranty.

The first eighteen-core desktop processor

The i9-7980XE Extreme Edition was the flagship of the first Skylake-X launch: eighteen cores with Hyper-Threading at 2.60 GHz with a 4.20 GHz Turbo, 24.75 MB of cache and a 165 W envelope, launched Q3 2017. It was the largest desktop processor Intel had shipped to that point.

It remains a reference point for HEDT computing: quad-channel DDR4, 44 PCIe 3.0 lanes, AVX-512 on every core and an unlocked multiplier. For render queues and multi-VM hosts the thread count still holds up well.

Instruction set extensions: Intel SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX and AVX2, plus AVX-512 with two 512-bit FMA units. Security and virtualisation: AES-NI, Intel VT-x with EPT and VT-d, Intel Boot Guard.

Which systems take this processor

Anything on the LGA2066 socket with an Intel X299 chipset. This is the HEDT (high-end desktop) platform: quad-channel memory, up to 44 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU and physically larger boards than the mainstream LGA1151 / LGA1200 lines.

Workstations and compute boxes — ASUS Prime X299 / Pro X299, MSI X299 RAIDER, Gigabyte X299 AORUS. Four memory channels and the 44-lane pool suit NVMe arrays, GPU compute and 10 GbE add-in cards that starve on mainstream sockets.

Upgrade path — an X299 board also accepts 6th to 10th Generation Core X processors up to 18 cores, so a build started with this part can be scaled up later without changing the platform.

One caveat: LGA2066 boards and coolers are not interchangeable with mainstream sockets — the socket, the cooler mounting and the memory layout are all different. Make sure your chassis supports an ATX or E-ATX board before ordering. Tell us the board model when you enquire and we will confirm.

The Cascade Lake 9980XE refresh brought the same eighteen-core layout to a refined die with higher clocks on the same socket — the natural in-place upgrade.

How each processor is tested before it ships

  1. Visual inspection of the integrated heat spreader, substrate and contact pads; the sSpec laser marking (SR3RS on our i9-7980XE stock) is verified against the Intel specification sheet.
  2. Burn-in on a matched diagnostic board with four matched memory modules (all four channels must be populated to reach the rated bandwidth).
  3. All populated memory channels and the primary PCIe lanes are validated, then the processor is identified in the BIOS and in the operating system.
  4. A sustained multi-threaded load test at full core count, with the clock and thermal readings recorded.
  5. Thermal paste cleaned off, final inspection, then packaging in an anti-static tray with foam — which is how it arrives to you.

Warranty and lead time

Every processor is covered by a 1-year warranty against defects in workmanship and function. If a part fails within the period we replace it or refund it, and we cover return shipping on a verified fault. Stock is held in our own warehouse and normally dispatches within three to seven working days; tracking is issued at dispatch.

Purchasing and volume enquiries

The minimum order quantity for this processor is 2 units. Price is quotation-based rather than listed, because CPU pricing moves with each incoming batch — send us the quantity you need and we will come back with a firm quote and the current lead time. Larger quantities ship from the same production batch so the sSpec and the stepping stay consistent across your order.
