Frequently Asked Questions

A Z170 chipset board (Z270 also works) for the unlocked multiplier, and a cooler rated for roughly 91 W or more — overclocked loads run well past the specification. Boxed units shipped without a cooler, and our stock is processor-only.

Yes — four cores and eight threads. The unlocked i5 of the same generation (the 6600K) has four threads without Hyper-Threading, which is the main difference between the two Kaby-generation K-parts in multi-threaded work.

Every unit carries a 1-year warranty against defects in workmanship and function. A verified faulty processor is replaced or refunded, and we cover the return shipping.

Every unit is inspected on arrival and again before dispatch: the heat spreader and the socket contact pads are checked for physical damage, thermal paste is cleaned off, and the processor is run through a full-core load test. Verified faulty units are replaced or refunded under our 1-year warranty.

The minimum order quantity is 2 units. Pricing is quotation-based rather than fixed, so send us the quantity you need and we will reply with a firm quote; volume orders are priced progressively lower.

Any board with an Intel chipset from this list: Intel 100 series (Z170 for overclocking; H110, B150, H170, Q170 run at stock) and C232/C236. Tell us the board or the machine model when you enquire and we will confirm compatibility and any BIOS requirement before you order.

2 channels DDR4-2133 or DDR3L-1600, up to 64 GB, with a maximum bandwidth of 34.1 GB/s. The board determines whether ECC modules can be used; on consumer chipsets the same modules run as plain non-ECC. DDR type is not interchangeable — check the board before ordering memory.

No. Intel HD Graphics 530 is integrated, so the motherboard video outputs drive the display and hardware video decode is handled on the iGPU. Add a discrete card only for gaming, CUDA or heavier compute work.

The TDP is 91 W and the maximum operating temperature is 100 °C, so a cooler rated for the LGA1151 socket and at least 91 W is sufficient. No cooler is included with the processor — make sure your chassis has one before the build.

Our stock ships under sSpec numbers SR2BR/SR2L0 — one model can carry several sSpec numbers across steppings, all the same specification. The laser marking on the integrated heat spreader is read off each unit and checked against the Intel specification sheet during inspection, and the sSpec is confirmed in the BIOS at boot.

The Intel Core i7-6700K Processor — 4 cores and 8 threads, 4.0 GHz base rising to 4.2 GHz with Turbo Boost, 8 MB Intel Smart Cache, 91 W processor base power, LGA1151. Supplied from stock with a 1-year warranty.

The unlocked Skylake i7

The i7-6700K is the enthusiast Skylake desktop processor: four cores with Hyper-Threading at 4.00 GHz with a 4.20 GHz Turbo, an unlocked multiplier and a 91 W envelope. It was the default gaming CPU recommendation of 2015–2016, and good samples commonly held 4.5–4.7 GHz on air.

Out of the box it is already the fastest Skylake i7; the unlocked multiplier is the reason to pick it over the 6700. Overclocking requires a Z170 (or later Z-series) chipset — H110, B150, H170 and Q170 boards run the chip at stock clocks only.

Which systems take this processor

Anything on the FCLGA1151 socket with an Intel 100 or 200 series chipset: H110, B150, B250, H170, H270, Q170, Q270 and Z270. Boards built for 7th Generation parts will run 6th Generation processors, and most 6th Generation boards take 7th Generation parts after a BIOS update.

One caveat when buying a board separately: 100 series boards may need a BIOS from late 2015 or later before a 7th Generation part will POST, and 200 series boards handle both generations out of the box. Tell us the board or the machine model when you enquire and we will confirm before you order.

The 7700K is the Kaby Lake successor: higher clocks on the same architecture, on the same socket and the same Z-series requirement. The 8700K is the real jump — six cores with Hyper-Threading — but it needs a 300 series board.

How each processor is tested before it ships

  1. Visual inspection of the integrated heat spreader, substrate and contact pads; the sSpec laser marking (SR2BR/SR2L0 on our i7-6700K stock) is verified against the Intel specification sheet.
  2. Burn-in on a matched diagnostic board with a pair of memory modules of the correct type for this platform.
  3. All populated memory channels and the primary PCIe lanes are validated, then the processor is identified in the BIOS and in the operating system.
  4. A sustained multi-threaded load test at full core count, with the clock and thermal readings recorded.
  5. Thermal paste cleaned off, final inspection, then packaging in an anti-static tray with foam — which is how it arrives to you.

Warranty and lead time

Every processor is covered by a 1-year warranty against defects in workmanship and function. If a part fails within the period we replace it or refund it, and we cover return shipping on a verified fault. Stock is held in our own warehouse and normally dispatches within three to seven working days; tracking is issued at dispatch.

Purchasing and volume enquiries

The minimum order quantity for this processor is 2 units. Price is quotation-based rather than listed, because CPU pricing moves with each incoming batch — send us the quantity you need and we will come back with a firm quote and the current lead time. Larger quantities ship from the same production batch so the sSpec and the stepping stay consistent across your order.
