A 32-core Gold N-series with dual-socket scalability

The 6428N belongs to the 4th Gen Xeon Scalable (Sapphire Rapids) family, launched in Q1 2023 on the Intel 7 process. It pairs 32 Performance-cores at 1.8 GHz all-core with a 3.8 GHz turbo ceiling, 60 MB of cache and a 185 W envelope. As a Gold-series N SKU it is rated 2S — validated for platforms with up to two sockets — which covers single- and dual-socket servers alike. Speed Select Technology adds four levers: Performance Profile re-clocks the same 32 cores into 1.8 GHz, 1.7 GHz and 1.8 GHz profiles (all within the 185 W envelope), Core Power splits it into 12 high-priority cores at 1.9 GHz and 20 low-priority cores at 1.5 GHz, Turbo Frequency can lift the turbo ceiling on chosen cores, and Base Frequency raises the all-core floor.

The platform: 8 channels of DDR5-4000 (at both 1 DPC and 2 DPC, up to 4 TB per socket), PCIe 5.0 with 80 lanes, and 3 UPI links at 16 GT/s to feed multi-socket topologies. Its accelerator quota ships pre-activated — one DSA device, two QAT devices and two DLB devices by default, plus AMX and DL Boost.

Most 5th Gen (Emerald Rapids) boards also accept it. Check that the chassis thermal design is rated for the 185 W TDP and that the BIOS is current, especially if the server originally shipped with a lower-power SKU.

How it compares across generations

Moving from Ice Lake to Sapphire Rapids roughly doubles the cache across the Gold range and switches the platform to DDR5 and PCIe 5.0; the 6428N adds AMX for inference workloads and on-die DSA/QAT/DLB accelerators its predecessors could not offer, plus Speed Select Performance Profile.
